Supporting Natural Foot Development

BAREFOOT BENEFITS

WHY BAREFOOT?

Babies’ and toddlers’ feet are constantly growing and developing. Giving little feet the freedom to move naturally allows toes to spread, flex and grip, while helping children feel the ground beneath them as they learn to balance and move.

Barefoot time is a simple way to give developing feet this freedom. When shoes are needed for warmth or protection, lightweight, flexible footwear with plenty of room for little toes can help provide a similar unrestricted feel.

BENEFITS OF BAREFOOT-STYLE SHOES

Barefoot-style footwear is designed to work with the natural shape and movement of little feet rather than restricting them.

Comparison of a regular shoe and barefoot-style shoe showing toe space
  • Wide toe space: Gives little toes plenty of room to spread, wiggle and move naturally, rather than being squeezed together.
  • Thin, flexible soles: Allow little feet to bend and flex naturally while helping children feel the ground beneath them.
  • Lightweight design: Keeps unnecessary weight off developing feet and allows little legs and ankles to move more freely.
  • Natural movement: Allows the feet and ankles to move without the restriction of a heavy or rigid shoe.
  • Non-restrictive fit: Follows the natural shape of little feet and gives growing toes the freedom they need to move.
  • Ground feedback: Being able to feel the surface beneath their feet can help little ones as they develop balance, coordination and confidence.

Barefoot-style shoes are not about adding extra support or structure. Instead, they aim to provide protection while allowing little feet to move in a way that feels as natural and unrestricted as possible.

DID YOU KNOW?

A baby’s feet are very different from an adult’s feet. During the early stages of development they are soft and flexible, with much of their structure still developing and hardening over time.

Long before those first steps, babies are already exercising their feet. Kicking, wriggling their toes, pushing against surfaces and eventually crawling all give them opportunities to explore movement and develop strength and coordination.

This is why giving little feet plenty of opportunity to move freely is so important during the early years.

HOW TO SUPPORT HEALTHY FOOT DEVELOPMENT

There are lots of simple ways to give growing feet the freedom to move and develop naturally.

  • Allow plenty of barefoot time in a safe environment.
  • Encourage kicking, tummy time, crawling and free movement.
  • Let babies explore different safe textures beneath their feet.
  • Make sure socks and tights aren't too tight around the feet and toes.
  • Check that sleepsuits and baby grows leave enough room for little toes to move freely.
  • When choosing shoes, look for lightweight, flexible styles with plenty of room around the toes.
  • Check your child’s shoe size regularly as little feet can grow quickly.

WHEN LITTLE FEET NEED SHOES

Barefoot is wonderful when it’s safe and practical, but little feet sometimes need protection from cold, rough or slippery surfaces.

That’s where thoughtfully designed footwear can help. Dotty Fish shoes are designed around barefoot principles, with lightweight, flexible soles and a non-restrictive shape that gives little toes room to spread and move naturally.

Our aim is simple: to protect little feet without getting in the way of their natural movement.
